Two in the afternoon, you feel it coming. The slow descent toward that familiar wall of energy loss. You could reach for another coffee and start the spiral — but the real Mediterranean way is different.

In small villages across Italy and Spain, there is a pattern: one cup at eight or nine AM to start the day, then nothing until lunch. After lunch, you rest or step outside or work in the shade. Then, if coffee is needed, it comes after five PM — late enough that it won’t steal your sleep.

If you must have something at three: hand-pulled espresso with no sugar, small cup, slow sip. Thirty seconds maximum. The point is not the caffeine. It is the ritual of stopping everything and taking care of yourself for one minute before you continue.

This works because it interrupts the afternoon slump without triggering another spike that crashes at four PM. You are honoring your biology: eat, rest, move, hydrate, repeat — no more than one fuel source at a time.
