Most modern gatherings are transactional. You meet at a set time. You leave at a set time. Nobody lingers. Nobody arrives unannounced. And nobody feels truly welcome.
That is not how a table works in the Mediterranean.
In Greece, a knock on the door at 7 PM is not an interruption. It is the beginning of the evening. A chair appears. A glass is filled. Food that was meant for four stretches to feed five without anyone mentioning it.
One Rule
Leave one chair open. Always.
Not physically — though that helps. Mentally. When you cook, cook for one more than you need. When you set the table, imagine someone might join. When someone does show up, act like you were expecting them.
This is not about being a doormat. It is about being ready. The Mediterranean home was never a fortress. It was a port — open to the sea, open to the wind, open to people.
Why It Works
Hospitality is not a chore here. It is the default setting. And default settings compound. A life lived with an open door collects more stories, more laughs, more unexpected dinners that turn into the best ones.
You do not need a bigger house. You need a bigger table. Or rather, you need the mentality that the table is already big enough.
The Bigger Picture
Modern life has optimized for privacy and efficiency. Locked doors. Scheduled calls. Eating alone in front of a screen. The Mediterranean tradition of philoxenia — literally “friend to the stranger” — runs in the opposite direction.
It says: the best things in life arrive unplanned, through people you did not know would become important. But only if you leave the door open.
Close the laptop. Pour the olive oil. Set one extra plate.
You are not preparing for a guest. You are preparing to be the kind of person guests want to show up for.
